Kevin Twit on Deconstruction and “Defeater Beliefs”

Sing!25 Interview

Anxious, Disillusioned, and Deconstructing: The Spiritual Climate on Today’s Campuses

For more than three decades, Kevin Twit has stood at the intersection of music and the spiritual questions of emerging adults. As the founder of Indelible Grace Music and longtime campus minister with Reformed University Fellowship at Belmont University, Kevin has had a front-row seat to the shifting landscape of belief among college students.

In a cultural moment marked by anxiety, polarization, and widespread “deconstruction,” Twit argues that many young adults are not rejecting Christianity because they’ve carefully reasoned their way out of it.

Instead, they are often wrestling with what he calls “defeater beliefs”—cultural assumptions that quietly undermine faith before it ever has a chance to be heard.

In this in-depth conversation, Twit reflects on the role of music in shaping theology, the pressures facing today’s students, and why humility and curiosity may be more persuasive than airtight arguments.
