A Bible Scholar and His Doubt

Sing!25 Interview

What happens when a world-class Bible scholar wrestles personally with doubt—and finds his faith rebuilt on solid ground?

In this case, a Bible translation used worldwide happens!

As principal and CEO of Tyndale House in Cambridge, Peter Williams has helped shape modern Bible translation through his work with the English Standard Version.

His widely read books—including Can We Trust the Gospels? and The Surprising Genius of Jesus—have made complex scholarship accessible to everyday readers around the world.

In this conversation with our COO, Matt, he reflects on a season of doubt during his university years—an experience that forced him to wrestle seriously with the arguments for and against the truth of Scripture. The result wasn’t a dramatic, “road to Damascus” conversion, but rather a gradual reconstruction of faith that resulted in resources used to share the gospel around the world.

From conversations with taxi drivers to weeks spent doing street evangelism each year, Williams describes how scholarly work on the reliability of the Gospels naturally opens doors for gospel conversations.
