Do You Wait on God Well?

By Jerry McCorkle

There’s an old saying:

“Patience is a virtue; possess it if you can. Seldom found in women and never found in man.” It’s a little tongue-in-cheek, but let’s be real — patience is hard for all of us.

About seven years ago, we were on the beaches of Daytona, and one of our kids was going through an incredibly tough time. We were desperate. We needed God to show up and do something. My wife walked out to the beach alone, dropped to her knees in the sand, and prayed, “God, I’m not leaving here until You tell me my child is going to be okay.”

Right then, God met her. She felt Him speak to her heart, reassuring her that our child would come back to Jesus. It was the hope we were clinging to.

But did it happen overnight? Not even close.

We went through another seven years of heartache, struggles, and moments where it felt like all hope was slipping away. It was brutal. But through it all, we kept believing God was working, even when we couldn’t see it.

Psalm 27:14 says, Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart be courageous. Wait for the Lord.

Waiting is hard. Especially when you see God moving in someone else’s life who hasn’t been waiting nearly as long. My wife jokes when that happens, “Hey, wait! You cut in line! It’s not your turn yet!”

But here’s what I’ve learned: God is so much bigger than our circumstances. He knows exactly what we need, even when His timing doesn’t line up with ours. Our lives, our family, our situation — it’s all in His hands.

Colossians 3:12 tells us to “put on patience.” And while I’ve always thought of that as patience toward others, this journey has taught me it’s also about having patience with God’s timing. Because let’s be honest, most of the time, I want answers right now.

But real patience, God-given patience, means trusting Him even when the waiting feels impossible. And looking back, I can see now — He was faithful all along.
